Top-ranked Panthers start football season 2-0

The Panther’s Tale

Friday’s edition of Derby football had a different feeling from the usual electricity that fills Panther stadium before games.

The night had a more solemn start than usual with everyone in attendance showing their pride and appreciation for all those who have fought and lost their lives serving our country.

On the field, the Panthers had an unusually slow start, with senior quarterback Dan Dawdy throwing an interception on the opening drive. Goddard added insult to injury by scoring on their opening drive and taking a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter.

What followed was a more usual sight for Derby fans as the Panthers scored 35 unanswered points going into the first half.

The 35-6 halftime score turned out to be the final because the game was called at the half due to severe thunderstorms. Derby, which started the game at 6 p.m. in order to try to avoid the storms, is 2-0.

The run game was pivotal once again for the Panthers. Junior Brody Kooser continued his excellent start with two rushing touchdowns. Dawdy also had a rushing touchdown and threw two touchdown passes to senior receiver Kenyon Tabor.
