Derby football at Maize: Battle of unbeatens

By Owen Berk

The Panther’s Tale

Derby’s Week 3 football match-up at Maize looks to be a game that will be won on the ground.

Both teams feature junior running backs who have starred in the first two weeks of the season. Derby’s Brody Kooser has shown explosiveness early on with 277 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries.

Maize’s Dalyn Johnson has carried the load, accounting for a whopping 79 percent of Maize’s offense with 497 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 49 carries. Johnson also had one reception for 31 yards and a receiving touchdown.

Derby, which is ranked No. 1 overall in several polls, comes in off a 35-6 win over Goddard. The game was called at the half due to severe weather.

Maize has surprised early on, starting 2-0 despite going just 1-8 last year. The Eagles beat Eisenhower 45-35 on Sept. 9 in a hard-fought battle that was iced in the final minutes on Johnson’s sixth rushing touchdown of the game.

Only time will tell which team will continue its run of dominance, and which team will be stopped dead in its tracks.
