Junior guard Madi Young suffered ligament damage on Jan. 5

It was the third quarter of Derby’s girls basketball game against Hutch on Friday. Derby was leading.

Junior guard Madi Young stepped to her right to defend an opponent.

But then pop.

Young thought she had torn her anterior cruciate ligament, an injury that kept senior Holly Mills from playing during the part of the basketball season in 2016-17.

Young froze. She had never had a serious injury before.

“Right when I felt it pop, I froze. I was like ‘oh my god’ I just tore my ACL. I’m done,” said Young, who has made a non-binding verbal commitment to play softball at Kansas.

Young had an MRI on Tuesday — no ACL tear. She dislodged some cartilage, which is floating behind her kneecap. She is out for eight weeks and will miss the rest of the basketball season but should be back for softball.

“I feel like I’m the energy of the team, so that kind of scares me. We need a couple of us to step up and like bring energy when they get on the court,” Young said. “We definitely need another sixth-man to come in and change our tempo.”
