Journalism student of the day: Brett Jones

BRETT JONES

Junior Yearbook photographer

Not much stumps Brett Jones, who is finishing his first year in yearbook. He’s a phenomenal photographer and videographer — a many-times award winner — who seems to have an answer for anything sent his way.

But he was stumped when asked his favorite song to rock out to. So he spent about 10 or so minutes — it could have been longer — listening to songs before he finally settled on “My Head Hurts” by Wavves.

His passion is filmmaking, and he put together an excellent documentary on Kennedy Brown, Derby’s stud basketball player.

He’s a quiet addition to the yearbook, but his photos quickly caught the attention of designers. He’s also designing photo spreads, basically teaching himself how to use the design program.

Yearbook surprised him.

“There’s a lot going on,” Brett wrote. “It’s a pretty big operation to pull off a yearbook.”

His favorite fellow yearbook staffer is senior sportswriter Kaitlyn Sanders.

“Cause she’s a boss and knows a lot about sports,” Brett wrote. “Also, (she) doesn’t get annoyed at my stupid jokes. Least she doesn’t say anything about it.”
