Adler out for football season

Junior quarterback Grant Adler suffered an injury to his left wrist during the third play of the Sept. 21 victory at Bishop Carroll.

After Adler was walked off the field, senior Hunter Igo played quarterback and safety for the rest of the game.

When Grant went down I had no clue what was happening,” Igo said. “I thought the defense was running onto the field and I wasn’t out there yet until I realized Grant was holding his arm walking off the field.”

Adler’s injury ended his football season.

My heart dropped when I found out Grant’s arm was broke,” Derby coach Brandon Clark said. “He has been working so hard to get to where he is at right now.”

Adler also is a varsity starter for the basketball and baseball teams.

“Fortunately, for the baseball team he will be healed and ready to play by spring time,” baseball coach Todd Olmstead said.

We are certainly hopeful that Grant will be fine by the time basketball season rolls around,” basketball coach Brett Flory said. “But if for some reason he can’t play this year… it would be a great opportunity for one of our younger players to step up and win that job.”

In 2017, Adler and Igo shared the quarterback role. Adler was injured during the Bishop Carroll game, too. Igo took over as quarterback until he was injured in the Class 6A title game. Adler replaced Igo.

Hunter has proven himself both as a leader and at QB last year. He will play both sides of the ball when needed,” Clark said.
