School Rivalries

It’s no secret that DHS has school spirit and with spirit comes competitive athletes and passionate fans. In each sport, Derby students have always thought of Campus as a rival.

“Campus is our biggest rival because they always have been and they always say they’re going to beat us but so far they haven’t,” junior Cole Hanson said.

Being rivals with Campus meant sporting events were a competition between both schools on the field and in the stands. The fans had just as much to offer to the rivalry as did the athletes.

Although Campus has been a rival to Derby for a long time other schools such as Hutchinson and Heights are considered rivals because of the competition they bring to our sports.

“Hutch is one of our biggest rivals because we haven’t beat them in awhile but this year we have the drive to win,” junior Chandler Benway said.

Although having competitive games, a fan section can make it more interesting, but it also caused arguments. Having so much competition between schools did start fights mostly over social media sites. The week before the Campus vs. Derby home football game, many things were said over twitter as to who was going to beat who.

“On Twitter some people’s conversations about the games went too far and they didn’t know when to stop,” senior Cade Cotten said.

There may have been tension between schools but some students were excited to play because they had friends on the opposing team. Competing with their friends brought out the competitive nature in the athletes.

“I have friends from other teams but it doesn’t effect our friendship we just joke around and have fun,” Cotten said.

Rivalry has been a tradition at Derby for many years and will always be a factor that brings students closer together.
