Kuntz: Balancing two sports, school results in busy schedule

Trinity Kuntz

Being a two-sport athlete and a full time student is exhausting.

I get to school at 7:35 a.m. and put my volleyball bag in the locker room. I sit down in Algebra 2, we take notes all hour and have no time in class to do homework. Third block rolls around and I have a quiz. After we take the quiz we take more notes over the quiz for tomorrow.

When the school day is over, volleyball starts at 3:25 p.m.. Depending on how well we do during practice decides whether practice is out at 5:30 or 5:45 p.m.

If softball is at our indoor facility, I hurry home to change into softball clothes and eat a quick snack, and then I’m out the door for a  2½-hour practice. I arrive right before 7 p.m. and start our long practice that doesn’t get out till 9:30 p.m.

It is a 30-minute drive from my house to the facility. I make it home and it’s 10 p.m. I still have math homework and need to study for a quiz. By the time I get done with my homework, it’s almost 11:30.

I still haven’t eaten dinner or taken a shower.

When softball practice is outdoors my dad picks me up from volleyball, and we head straight for softball practice. There’s no time to go home and change, so I change in the car and eat dinner on the way.

I arrive at practice and I’m late. Practice ends when it’s dark because there’s no lights. We get back into Derby and have to pick my car up.

So by the time I get home to do homework, it’s already 9 p.m. I get homework done, shower and eat a small snack. A good thing about having an earlier practice is that I get to bed at 10:30.

It was very hard to catch up on sleep when school started back up because I’m going to bed late and have a tournament every weekend.

The worst part about playing a high school sport and a club sport at the same time is that volleyball is every day, while softball is 5-7 times a week. And you are only home for sleep.

Most Tuesdays I miss softball practice because it’s game day for volleyball. Most of the time I can’t do homework on the bus — it’s loud and always a bumpy ride. So I have to do homework when I get home.

It is very stressful with the amount of homework I have and how late I get home every night of the week.
