Returning for a second semester of school means winter homecoming. The week of Jan. 7 – 11 was DHS’s winter homecoming.The week included the spirt week dress up days, homecoming queens and class competitions. The freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors competed on a hall decorating competition. Each class was assigned a different theme, the over all theme was super heroes. Freshman had Batman, sophomores had the Hulk, juniors had Green Lantern, and the seniors had Superman. The classes had all week to prepare their hall and Thursday night to set it up. Then Friday at the homecoming pep rally, they announced which hall won. The seniors won the homecoming halls with their Superman theme.

The student’s favorite part of spirit week was the dress up days. The dress up days were: Monday-pajama day, Tuesday-dress like you did as a kid, Wednesday-animal print day, Thursday-Disney day and Friday-panther pride day.

The final activity of winter homecoming was the winter olympics. At the schools pep rally on Jan. 11, 2013  the classes go head to head and compete in different activities. The first activity was balancing a penny on the nose and dropping it into a cup. Second was throwing a hula hoop around a toilet seat. Third the most was a scooter race across the gym floor. The winners of the winter olympics was the Juniors for getting the most points during the activities.

The last aspect of winter homecoming is the homecoming queens. The candidates were Seniors Ashlyn Brown, Lauren Bussman, Kelsey Case, Alex Chase, and Thao Pham. At the Varsity boy’s basketball homecoming game on Jan. 11 the winner was announced. Derby’s 2013 winter homecoming queen was Alex Chase.
