Shang-Chi: and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the first marvel movie led by a Chinese-Canadian actor. It has recently been revealed by lead actor Simu Liu that disney executives have been treating the movie as an advertising experiment. We asked students why they thought asain representation in a marvel movie is important and what they thought about disney’s handling of the advertising.

“It’ll be good [representation]. We’ve had a lot more Asian American movies coming out like Crazy Rich Asians was a thing and yeah it’s a really good time in Hollywood for that so I think it’s a really good time to get some representation.,” junior Noah Yon said.

“Honestly not that much [advertising] for a Marvel Movie like Black Widow had more advertising but honestly I’ve still seen quite a bit of it,” Yon said.

“I don’t think they are marketing it that much because its not as important to them as other movies were,” junior Emily Bui said.

“Yes I definitely do think that it is important because this is the first asian superhero that I’ve heard of or even seen so I think it’s important,” Bui said.
