Teacher Turkey’s all about the pie — and helping others

There’s a longtime fundraiser that would get the winners a slice of pie.

Teacher Turkey is a fundraiser that the teachers look forward to each year. Whether they want to win for bragging rights, a pie or just the sole purpose of helping the communities’ families with holiday assistance.

“We have done this fundraiser forever, probably more than 20 years. Teacher Turkey is actually something we did when I went to high school here. We do teacher turkey because  it brings friendly competition between teachers to encourage students to give to a good cause,” Student Council sponsor Sara Wilson said.

To donate for teacher turkey, students give their money to their homeroom teacher and that money is collected and used to buy gift cards to give away to families from DHS who need it for the holidays. The homeroom that raises the most money gets a pie party.

“We help raise money to buy gift cards to give to the families of DHS who need a little extra help during the holiday season,” Wilson said.

English and Reality 101 teacher Megan MacKay thinks it is unfair that Argo the therapy dog is part of the competition.

“It is completely unfair that they put a dog in the competition because I am going to lose. If the dog doesn’t win it is going to be depressing to me because it’s a dog and it should win. If Argo doesn’t win there is something wrong with our student population,” said MacKay as she laughed.

Update

Teacher Turkey has had a new money record from 2019 teacher turkey with $2,100 to this year with a total of $2,335.53.
