The two-time defending Class 6A champion Panthers opened the football season with a 48-14 win against Eisenhower on Friday to extend their winning streak to 24 games.
With a huge student section dressed all in white, the Panthers got it started with Hunter Igo at quarterback. Senior Brody Kooser put Derby up ahead early when he scored from a yard out with 5:09 to go in the first quarter.
With 1:39 to go in the period, Kooser scored again, and Jackson Syring made the extra point for the 13-0 lead.
Kooser had a big night. He scored his third touchdown — he had four — just four seconds into the second quarter for the 20-0 lead.
Eisenhower scored with 6:12 left before the half and trailed 20-7.
But Kooser used his quickness to evade tacklers as he returned the second-half kickoff 94 yards for the touchdown and the 27-7 lead.
After an Eisenhower score, sophomore Grant Adler came in at quarterback. On his third pass, he hit senior Jack Taylor for a 30-yard touchdown and the 34-14 lead.
With five minutes left in the third, junior Cade Lindsey recovered a fumble and scored for the 41-14 lead.
To start the fourth, Adler ran seven yards for Derby’s final touchdown.
There were some concerns, though. During the game senior offensive lineman Evan Clark and senior linebacker Alex McGill both walked off the field with what looked like leg injuries, but both do not seem to be serious.
