I wanted to be in the yearbook my freshmans year, but I settled on the newspaper.
I remember getting thrown on my first story about new lockers in the school. I had no idea what I was doing, but it did not take long for me to realize how important this journalism community is.
Being able to create a print full of stories for everybody to hand out to the school is something special.
I have been apart of this paper for the past fours years and the design editor for three, I have redesigned the whole entire newspaper with my fellow editors, stayed up all night working on the cover more times than I can count and gone crazy on send days, but I would never replace this, my staff, or my adviser that has taught me so much for anything else.
This is where I found I belong and this is where I found my passion.
For my younger staff members, you are doing something that not many people get to do. The stories you are covering are important, you are creating a platform for voices of Derby High and creating a more informed and engaged community with each story, even the hard ones. Who will talk about it if we don’t?
I am so proud of every staff member I have gotten to work with, everyone in the newspaper works so hard creating this paper, they never let backlash falter them and they continue to put themselves out there.
