Bishop Carroll vs. Derby: Powerhouse vs. powerhouse

Carroll plays at Derby in a battle of two of the state’s top programs, teams

It’s time for Round 2 against one of the most anticipated football opponents of the season.

The Derby Panthers (3-1) play host to the Bishop Carroll Golden Eagles (4-0) at 7 p.m. on Friday.

The teams’ matchup in 2016 season was the first between the two power schools at Bishop Carroll, in which the Panthers dominated 49-13.

In 2015 the game was announced after there was an open date in both schools’ football schedules.

The anticipated game brought a huge crowd to the Bishop Carroll stands last year, and that’s expected again on Friday at Derby.

“The game has a lot of hype because Bishop Carroll is year after year one of the best teams in 5A,” Derby athletic director Russell Baldwin said.

Derby won the Class 6A state championship with an undefeated record for its second straight title, while Bishop Carroll finished the season 7-3.

“I’m sure it’s going to be a sellout on Friday Regardless of their records, this is a highly anticipated game,” said Taylor Eldridge, the Wichita Eagle’s high school sportswriter.

Highly anticipated games come with high-level players.

“Their senior quarterback Braden Howell, he’s taken his game to another level,” Eldridge said. “That’s going to be the big challenge Friday night for Derby. They kind of got smoked when they saw a dual threat quarterback last time in Goddard’s Blake Sullivan. This is the first challenge after that to see how that defense fairs against someone who can throw it and run it as good as Howell can.”

The Panthers have watched a lot of Carroll film, planning what to look for during the game.

“Defense we see their top five plays and watch a lot of film on individual players and relate scheme. Offense we just watch their defense and mostly watch ourselves and see what we are doing wrong to run plays better,” Derby senior Jack Taylor said.

Taylor wants the Panthers to score a lot of touchdowns on Carroll, but Eldridge’s focus is on on Derby’s defense battling that Carroll offense.

“That secondary is really going to get tested,” Eldridge said. “Hutchinson never throws the ball, so (Derby) kind of got that week off, but now it’s their time to shine. That Derby secondary against the Carroll receivers will probably be the match-up of the week.”

Quarterbacks, offense, defense. No matter the focus of the game, it’s a special game to every football fanatic.

“Two great fan bases, two great programs, two of the very best in just about everything,” Eldridge said. “It really is a treat to see teams not shy away from playing in these big games before the playoffs, kind of risking that loss in the regular season just because they know playing each other is gonna make them that much better.”

Baldwin said there is no official seating number for a packed stadium, but the crowd once reached 4,000 fans. He added that there is a possibility the teams will face each other again over the next two seasons.
