The Panthers battled it out with Maize South on Friday before hanging on for the 35-27 win.
Quarterback Easton Splane had 299 passing yards and four touchdowns – two passing and two rushing – along with 113 rushing yards.
He hit Colton Ruedy for a 93-yard touchdown pass. Ruedy finished with 137 receiving yards, while Da’Saahn Brame had five receptions for 142 yards.
The run game was established early on when running back Derek Hubbard broke off a 31-yard rushing score.
After Maize South tied the score at 7-all, the Panthers scored three unanswered touchdowns for the 28-7 halftime score.
Maize South responded to open the second half, though, scoring 13 unanswered to get within 28-20.
But Hubbard caught a 20-yard pass from Splane to extend the lead to 35-20. The Panthers’ defense did what it needed the rest of the way.
The Panthers will take the field at Riverfront Stadium in Wichita to play Newton on Oct. 20.
