Panthers, Washington eager to finish regular season well
October 20, 2017
It’s time for the final regular season game.
The Derby (6-1) travel to rival Campus (4-3) in Haysville tonight at 7 p.m.
Campus beat Hutchinson 35-7 on Oct. 13 for the first time since 1999. The last time Campus, which won 16 games in the previous 10 seasons, had a winning regular season was in 2005.
“It’s exciting. There’s gonna be a lot of people there,” sophomore running back Tre Washington said. “We worked hard this week, so we’re gonna do everything we did in practice and put it on the field and hopefully come up with a W.”
Washington has played in multiple fourth quarters and earned some touchdowns.
“It’s a great feeling knowing that I’m young and I’m doing good on varsity and I got two more years of it,” he said. “There should be a lot more good things coming.”
Washington is not the only underclassmen involved in varsity play.
Freshmen quarterbacks Davin Simms and Lem Wash have played late in games, too.
“Most of them play JV, too, so we play a lot in JV games together,” Washington said. “We’ve grown a good feel for each other on the field through JV games and the second half when we get in with each other on varsity games.”
Practice all year has lead up to the last regular season game and hopes for home-field advantage during the playoffs.
“It’s been a long ride up to this point but everything we do in the offseason prepares us for this and later on in the playoffs,” Washington said.
