Derby got a big win in Manhattan on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Class 6A playoffs for the Panthers’ 10th straight win.
The Panthers, who led 20-14 at half, won 23-21 at Manhattan behind the leg of kicker Grady Jesseph, who hit the game-winning 26-yard field goal with 37 seconds left in the game.
Manhattan had beaten Derby three times in the past 14 months, including in the 2022 Class 6A semifinals.
Quarterback Braxton Clark was able to find the endzone twice, once on the ground and once through the air. He completed 17 of 25 passes for 288 yards, connecting with Colton Ruedy for 108 yards, Daylan Beldsoe 85 and Da’Saahn Brame 77.
Running back Derek Hubbard scored the last touchdown for Derby on an 18-yard rushing touchdown.
The Panthers’ defense was able to step up big, holding Manhattan to 21 points in comparison to the 41.4 points the defending Class 6A champions had averaged this season. The Panthers forced two fumbles and recovered them both, which crucially changed the game.
The Panthers play at unbeaten Washburn Rural in the 6A semifinals on Nov. 17.
