Although powerlifting may not be a traditional sport in Derby, senior Rylan Syring is making her name known at the high school and collegiate level.
On Nov. 8, Syring made history by being the first person from Derby to sign to a college for powerlifting.
“I signed to Ottawa University for powerlifting and the signing was incredible,” Syring said.
Syring had incredible support from her friends, family and even classmates.
“There were so many people who came from out of town, or left work to be at my signing and it meant so much to have everyone there,” Syring said.
Although, friends and family weren’t the only ones to celebrate Syring’s achievement.
“I had probably four or five news stations reach out to me about my signing, I even have a few interviews set up,” Syring said.
Syring is really passionate about powerlifting because when lifting, she feels she can become zen.
“I love seeing other women lifting each other up, and being able to pave the way for women and men in this sport,” Syring said.
Powerlifting is something that Syring might consider pursuing in the future.
“I would definitely love to continue in it as long as I possibly can, and even maybe become a coach or trainer at some point,” Syring said.
