Imagine you start a new school and finally get settled in, when all of a sudden you have to do it all over again.
This is a real reality for military kids.
Many families move across the country every couple of years depending on their contract. Some families have the opportunity to move around the world.
Thirteen percent of the Derby district is made up of military kids, mostly because McConnell Air Force Base is North of the school. In the district, Cooper Elementary is connected to the base housing.
While Kansas doesn’t have the glamor of other places, some don’t mind staying.
“McConnell because it’s very nice and open,” sophomore France Cueto said.
Moving either within the country or the world can expose you to different cultures.
“So in Germany they have a different Christmas. It’s better because it’s essentially a 3 day long feast. It’s so good and I love it because there’s really good food and I love food,” senior Thalia Dyer-Verdejo said.
Although when people think about how bad it must be there are a lot of positives.
“I mean I spoke some Japanese for a while since I lived there,” Cueto said.
Some kids even stay in touch with the friends they made across the way.
“I would probably go to Louisiana because I have a lot of friends there that I went to elementary school with that I haven’t seen them in forever,” sophomore KaiLee Derrick said. “… “I’m actually friends with a lot of the people I’ve met throughout the years. I met one of my best friends 7 years ago in Louisiana and we talk on a daily basis.”
