The Derby Panthers couldn’t catch a break in Maize Eagle territory.
Maize’s Chase Schreiner scored his only points on a last-second basket on Friday to get the 61-59 win at home.
Derby falls to 0-2 and plays Salina Central on Tuesday.
The Panthers trailed all game, including by a game-high 15 in the second quarter.
Eagles junior Caleb Grill gave the Panthers a run for their money with multiple three-pointers.
Derby seniors Tyler Brown, who scored a game-high 19 points, Bryant Mocaby and Emilio Valentin all had significant three-pointers in the second half.
By the fourth quarter, Derby cut the lead down to single digits. The rest of the quarter was close, with the Panthers even leading by two points with 1:13 left in the game.
