Driving in Bad Weather

Amaya DeCarlo

This morning Derby High School students went to school in freezing rain. Wrecks happen because of slick roads, but do students know how to keep themselves safe? Here are some tips for driving in the winter.

  1. Try test driving in the snow or ice in an empty parking lot to gauge how your car reacts to the weather. Do not assume that your car will work exactly how it does when the roads are normal.
  2. Before leaving your car, put your heater on full blast and on the windshield vents, this way you can start your car up before a drive and the ice on your windshield melts.
  3. If you are not planning on wearing a heavy coat, at least keep one in your car. Always be prepared. If your car breaks down, you will be able to stay warm and wait for help safely.
  4. Decrease following distance, because of the ice you may not be able to stop where you are planning on stopping.
  5. It is okay to drive slower than usual. Always consider safety.
