Derby robotics held an in-house competition with five teams competing to go to Cheney’s Last Chance Tournament. The team is hoping to qualify for many competitions during the remaining months they have left. There are five teams competing for 3 spots at Derby on Wednesday February 7th.
Teams 50027 X, V and, P are the teams that will be going to tournament on February 24th. The team members that will be present at the event are Lucas Lyman, James Lyman, Wyatt Thompson, Eden Thompson, and Thomas Berry, (team 50027X), Ethan Poulin, Vincent Shaffer, Hunter Smith, and Anthony Loera, (team 50027V), Jabin Pankratz, Jordyn Cohr, Chase Robinson, Caleb McEachern, and Landon Maness, (50027P).
“They are hoping so secure a spot in either of the competitions after the Last Chance tournament,” Ms. Morgan stated. She believes that there is always an opportunity to get to these big competitions. “We have more focused teams participating in this years robotics club. They are present more often and are working hard to get better…you would think that this in house competition would be less serious but they really gave it their all,” Ms. Morgan said.
The teams went and competed at the VEX Last Chance Tournament on February 24th. Lucas Lyman (team 50027) was very excited that they did well in the competition. “I liked hanging out with friends that I spend so much time around because of robotics” Lyman said. Everyone in robotics are very smart and kind people. Almost the whole team gets along and are friends, and if they are the closest friends, they at least find ways to work together as a team and have the best outcomes possible.
“I want to say 40-42 teams at the competition…and usually its about three to four people per team.” Lyman said. These teams come from schools all around Kansas, but not every school comes even close to qualifying for this tournament. Every student that attended the Last Chance Tournament has worked long and hard for their spots and truly deserve to the there. Lucas Lyman, James Lyman, Eden Thompson, Wyatt Thompson, and Thomas Berry have spent months working on their robot before and after school during the week to perfect its build, programming, and making sure they know their robot and how to run it. All together, Lymans team ran 11 matches and won every one of them.
