The Scholastic Art Competition is the largest art recognition program for middle and high schoolers in the United States. Participants can submit any piece of work from their preferred medium. They are judged based on originality, technical skill, and emergence of a personal vision or voice, and they can receive a Gold Key, Silver Key, Honorable Mention or American Visions & Voices Nominees award.
At the Eastern Kansas Scholastic Art Competition, the region-based competition, three Derby students were recognized.
Senior Kylee Roeder received an Honorable Mention in Ceramics, senior Nyra Brown received an Honorable Mention and a Silver Key in Ceramics, and junior Kelsie McCormac received an Honorable Mention in Ceramics and a Silver Key in Sculpture.
Brown and McCormac will have their Silver Keys on display at MarkArts in Wichita from February until March 10.
