While rumors of a student with a gun circulated after a hold during ninth block on April 2, staff notified students and families otherwise.
“I cannot discuss exactly what it is, but it isn’t what these rumors are going around saying — it wasn’t anything like that,” Student Resource Officer Nick Hale said.
According to Hale, information may be released, but he is not at liberty to share.
“I can (speak on the issue) when I am told by someone above me,” Hale said.
At 3:19 administration sent out an email to further answer questions and dismiss these rumors.
The email from principal Gretchen Pontious said:
“Earlier this afternoon, Derby High School briefly went into a “Hold” as part of our Standard Response Protocol (SRP). Derby Public Schools uses the SRP as a crisis response that helps staff, students, parents and first responders quickly and adequately respond to situations.
“Hold is an action when hallways need to be kept clear, even during class changes, often used in times of a medical emergency. When in Hold, business continues as usual in the classroom; the intent is to keep hallways clear.
“There was no weapon or threat to the school. In the event of a crisis situation at Derby Public Schools, you would receive direct communication from the school or district. Review safety procedures here: https://www.derbyschools.com/
