Gas. The constant weight on all teenagers with cars, will they be able to afford to fill up their tank? Are they going to be able to make it home without their tank running empty? Nowadays gas prices are never set in stone, ranging from a crisp $2.50 to an astounding $3.75.
Making the bank to pay gas prices has become one of the biggest challenges struggling high school teenagers face.
Some may have a gas allowance from their parents while others have to be conservative with their change, keeping how much their drive to the movies might cost.
“My parents said when they were young they paid for their gas, but it’s not as affordable anymore so I can’t pay for it as a high schooler,” sophomore Ashlyn Snead said.
Another contributing factor to the constant hole burned in students’ wallets are the types of cars they are driving. Whether you’re driving a gas guzzling SUV or an energy efficient Hyundai, the difference can be eye opening.
“I have a car that is pretty cheap and doesn’t cause that much damage to my wallet when it comes to having to fill up my gas tank which saves a lot of grief on my part.” Sophomore Remy Fowler said.
Those who are thinner on cash than most have to limit their mileage to as little as possible and only fill up their gas when absolutely necessary. High gas prices and low bank balances require creative thinking and solutions, which sometimes might mean taking advantage of lower gas prices in other cities other than Derby.
“I drive a truck and I buy gas from other cities such as Mulvane at their jumpstart. It is a few cents cheaper and I already go down there once a week and it is really helping out on gas,” senior Landen Tucker said.
