Derby boys finish fifth at McPherson basketball tournament

Derby (7-4) faced three teams over the weekend at the tournament in McPherson.

Thursday started the match-ups with the Bishop Carroll Golden Eagles (7-5) in the quarterfinals.

The Panthers trailed the entire game — by as much as 21 although they were within three — and lost 76-60.

Friday the Panthers played against the Junction City Blue Jays (3-8).

Derby did not let the Blue Jays run too far away with their leads this game, eventually leading in the second half and winning 73-68.

The Panthers played Wichita North (6-6) for fifth place on Saturday.

The Panthers fought back and forth for the lead — North only had four players score — and won 87-75..

Senior Tyler Brown was added to the McPherson all tourney team with a combined 74 points over all three days.

Senior Bryant Mocaby was the next highest scorer with 50 points, tying with Brown for 25 points against North.

The Panthers now have a new two-game winning streak and play host to Maize South on Tuesday.
