The girls basketball team is 7-0 since opening the season on Dec. 6 with a loss to Andover, one of the top teams in Class 5A. The Panthers have two seniors, leaving big roles for the younger team members to fill.
“We have a lot of young players, with only two seniors on the roster, so we are relying on these younger players to step up and take on major roles, and they’re doing a fantastic job,” coach Bryan Chadwick said.
The girls have an upcoming tournament in Emporia next weekend, where many of the top teams in the state compete at. The Panthers are seeded third and will be facing off against sixth-seeded Wichita South on Jan. 30 with a possibility of playing second-seeded Wichita Heights in the semifinals.
It will be a tough schedule, but the girls have each other’s backs.
“We all bring a different aspect of basketball to the team and that’s what makes us so good on the court,” junior Karlie Demel said.
Though the team does have some injuries — sophomores Mariah Heron and Shadai Jackson both are out due to ACL injuries. Jackson possibly might be back for upcoming games in the season.
