The student section for Derby basketball has been very underwhelming for the past couple of weeks.
The boys going 14-0 in regular season is no easy feat, yet Derby has managed to do so. So the question is: where are the students supporting their team at?
“I just feel like basketball has no one. You see all these people show up for football but that’s all,” sophomore Sunnie Getchell said.
In past years, the entire section has been filled with numerous students showing up and out at the home games. Partial credit is due to the Panther Mafia, which is a student-run X page that talks about Derby’s opponents and themes for the games.
“Panther Mafia made us excited to go to the game because we had themes to go along with,” junior Kiera Trapp said.
There are still games left in regular season. On Feb 14, or Valentine’s Day, Derby plays Hutchinson High School.
“I hope that in the future more people show up, it really does make it more fun for the players and the people who already go,” Getchell said.
School spirit is important to keep a sense of community and belonging. Even though there has been a decline in support for the players at the games, a turnaround is definitely possible in the future.
