State champions and record-breakers have done it once again.
The team scored 3,086 pins, beating the previous state record by 52. This averages out to 257 pins per game.
“The most challenging part for me was rebounding from game two, which was my lowest game, and knowing the state record was on the line,” sophomore Michael Stanger said. “And we were talking about beating our state record all year, but actually doing it today was the best feeling.”
Junior Cash Carns agreed.
“Beating the record for the second time means a lot to me, especially with the same people I have gotten super close with this past year. I am very glad we were able to do it again.”
For seniors Evan Clark, Dawson Baumgartner, Tyler Huffman and Tai Gibbon, it means more than just another win on senior night.
“I mean it means a lot, especially being able to do it again is truly special,” Clark said. “Also, being able to do it with these guys makes it even better.”
Though the season isn’t over, there’s still a chance for the boys to beat the record for the third time.
“I don’t think Derby is going to beat it again because we have such a deep team. The only way we will be able to beat it is if we do it this year, and there is still a chance to beat it, but we put up some big scores today, and it will definitely be hard to beat it again,” Carns said.
With supportive family, friends and coaches, the team couldn’t have built a better program.
“I knew they had it in them,” head coach Brett Cunningham said. “I thought that the record was going to stand forever, but I knew that the only team that could do it was this team right here.”
