At the 2025 6A state wrestling tournament, sophomore Veronica Madrid won the state title at 155 pounds.
Junior Chloe Spears was fourth at 170.
Overall, Derby placed eleventh as a team with 72.5 points scored.
“I was happy. I was excited, (and) it was an opportunity for me to come out here and wrestle my absolute best,” Madrid said.
Madrid finished the season with a 35-1 record and earned her first state title. Madrid was named the 6A girls regional wrestler of the year, which was given to her before the championship round started because of the heart and passion she shows on and off the mat.
Spears is hopeful for next year, which will be her last high school wrestling season.
“(State) meant a lot to me (because) it showed all the hard work I’ve been putting in finally paying off,” she said.
