Junior Harper Wintz swept the ball across the field; she passed it to sophomore Jocelyn Lumberas; Lumberas focused her gaze on the goal at the end of the field.
She took her shot, and it went in.
And just like that, the Derby girl’s varsity soccer team made history.
For the first time ever, the squad beat Maize High School 1-0 on April 22, marking a significant moment in the season.
“It was kind of surreal, being the first team to ever beat Maize in a derby women’s soccer history. It was crazy,” junior varsity player Lilly Araiza said.
The team has only had one loss so far, displaying their hard work and determination to make it as far as they can.
“It was a great and really important game for our record, and hopefully a league title,” Araiza said.
As the team continues on throughout the rest of the regular season, and eventually into the postseason, this memorable victory will continue to give them hope for the future of Derby girl’s soccer.
“I don’t know what the remainder of the season will hold, but I’m just thankful for the experience that I’ve had with these girls,” Araiza said.
The squad is closer than ever this year, and each game– victory or loss– brings them closer together and the ability to become better team members.
