Getting dressed every morning: something everyone does, but only a few find joy in. For some, these may just be clothes on their backs, but for others it’s their entire personality.
Fashion has not only been a way for people to showcase their feelings, but also to connect to others who share the same passion.
“I just like to express myself however I feel that day,” sophomore Ellie Swindle said. I like seeing other people’s outfits, so I like to think that other people like to see my outfits every day.
Going against what society deems as normal may feel scary at first. For sophomore Lily Dannis, it took a while to come out of her shell and wear the clothes she wanted to.
“I feel like I’ve always wanted to express myself in fashion, but I didn’t feel comfortable enough to do it until last year,” Dannis said.
Really, I just didnt entirely feel like myself,i felt like i was chasing something that wasn’t gonna happen but then i met my friend group and they all helped me a lot gave me that confidence boost when I needed it.
However, as time went on, it became easier. Soon enough, her style became a part of her.
“Fashion is just part of who I am at this point,” Dannis said. “I couldn’t see myself going every day wearing the same things.”
While some people fell in love with the way they looked, junior Hunter Clark fell in love with the process.
“It’s fun to go thrifting and find things to wear and put outfits together,” Clark said.
Overall, fashion has been an outlet for expression. Whether it be feelings or preferences, clothes have been a way for people to show different personalities.
“I think it’s really important for everyone to express themselves, even if it’s just leggings, I think it’s still expressing yourself,” Swindle said.
Whether it be goth, alternative, streetwear, or athletic, each style displays a different person.
“I think it’s important to stick out from the crowd and just be your authentic self. I think it’s good to have different styles to show different personalities,” junior Ashlyn Newingham said.
Clothing like sweaters and vests helps Clark express himself.
“I don’t want to be the same as everyone else, and I want to dress how I want without caring what other people think,” Clark said.
When going against social norms, a flood of negative feedback rolls in. However, with the backlash, many compliments are given as well.
“I love the way I dress, and I don’t care what other people think,” Swindle said. I get equally as many compliments as I do backlash. I like hearing the compliments enough to ignore the backlash.
