Homunculus is a movie released back in April 2, 2021. And I don’t like it.
Susumu Nakoshi who goes under a surgical procedure known as trepanation. Which is the act of drilling a hole in one’s skull.
In the story it is believed that undergoing this procedure could improve blood flow and thus unlock the brain’s full potential.
This surgery was done by a medical student named Manabuu Ito, to which he then tried to study the effects on Nakoshi for 10 days.
After one of these days Nakoshi is killing time when some dirt blows into his right eye. As soon as he covers his eye, he sees them.
The homunculus, the inner manifestation of people’s emotional or physical trauma.
I really like the dark, grimy atmosphere. I think overall the film is visually pleasing, the compositions, the lighting and the outfits they wore, were all perfect.
Overall though this movie is just fine. Although the thing about this film is that it’s an adaptation of a comic.
The original story of Homunculus is gross and disturbing.
One of the most disturbing parts of Homunculus is seeing Nakoshi delve into insanity. In the both stories he goes around and helps people get rid of their homunculus.
In the movie there was only one person whose homunculus he got rid of was really terrible. While in the comics he isn’t helping them he’s forcing them to face their trauma head on.
And some of these people aren’t ready and it leads to Nakoshi ruining their lives, for his own selfish gain.
I know a film is gonna have to cut and change some stuff, but at a certain point if it changes the original point of the story why even adapt it.
It did some things well like the first two story arcs are adapted basically one to one with the comics, but then it goes and makes it a completely different story.
