If you’re not at Maize High on Friday night, you will miss what is expected to be a heck of a game.

Both the Panthers and the Eagles are undefeated at 7-0.

“I know our team is good and they’ll know what to do and where to fit,” defensive coordinator Mitch Pontious said. “I know we’re going to play hard,”

On Oct. 5, Derby beat rival Campus 48-13, while Maize beat Salina Central 48-26.

“We’ve just been playing well as a unit. Everyone has kind of bought into the team,” senior outside linebacker Cade Lindsey said. “We’re playing at a really good level and we’re continuing to improve.”

Through six games, Maize gave up nine points, the lowest allowed in Class 6A.

“Maize is a very good team, they’re coached well. They’ll be ready,” Pontious said.

The Eagles have outscored opponents 283-35.

“I think it will be a tough game because Maize is very, very good, but I think if we play our game, it shouldn’t last that long,” senior defensive end Isaac Keener said.

The Panthers have outscored opponents 362-39.

“We’re not allowing people to rush on us,” Keener said. “I’m really liking it.”

Derby held Campus to minus-16 rushing yards.

Perhaps Derby’s biggest challenge will be stopping Maize quarterback Caleb Grill and running back Caden Cox. The pair have been dominating.

“They got a lot of talent, but nothing I’m too concerned about right now,” Lindsey said. “I think we’re going to be better prepared. I think we’re going to be ready for them.”
