In May 2016, Derby High School announced that they would allow transgender students to use the bathrooms of the gender they identify with because of the guidance letter that was sent to all schools in the United States.
But on Wednesday, President Donald Trump revoked this letter.
Will this affect the students at Derby?
The Department of Justice and the Department of Education issued a new guidance letter that stated that states have the right to choose on this matter.
Kansas does not have a specific law or policy regarding this matter.
“In the near future I will be sharing with the Board of Education the language of the new guidance letter from The Department of Justice and the Department of Education. It will then be up to the Board of Education to determine how they wish to proceed,” superintendent, Craig Wilford wrote in an e-mail.
There was a letter that was received by the Board of Education, and they will be making the decisions for the future.
“I have not been directed to change anything at Derby High School as of today,” Derby principal Tim Hamblin wrote in an e-mail on Thursday.
Until any direction from the Board of Education is given then everything will remain the same. Transgender students can still use the bathrooms that they identify with.
“Derby High School is today exactly as it was three days ago,” Hamblin wrote.
