Derby Plaza Theater works to stay open with creative deals

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on the movie industry, causing a lull in business for movie theaters across the country.

Derby Plaza Theaters, a local family owned theater, is at risk of shutting down.

“People can help us by coming in, seeing a movie and getting concessions,” employee Beth Abel wrote in an email. “We are showing “Coco,” “Hocus Pocus,” “Tenet,” “Ava,” “Heaven,” “Henchmen” and “War with Grandpa.” … Most of those are new releases.”

Alongside new releases, throwback movies are also being shown. Tickets can be purchased online or at the concession stand and show times are at www.derbyplazatheaters.com/ or by calling (316) 789-0114.

The theater is also following guidelines and safety precautions to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

“Our employees are required to wear masks and sanitize, and we disinfect every theater after each showing,” Abel said.

Concessions can be purchased for curbside pickup every Friday and Saturday from 6-9 p.m., but are available every day at the concession stand.

Another way to support the theater? Book a private showing by contacting Abel at [email protected]

“Private showings are awesome — you and your group get the whole theater to yourself, and you get to pick the movie you want to see, (and) the day and time,” Abel said.

“… Covid-19 has slowed us down immensely, and we don’t get a lot (of money through) tickets, so buying concessions or (booking) a private showing is huge.”
