After not having a Week 1 opponent, Derby football came out with a bang Friday night.

The Panthers beat the Newton Railers 50-17 to earn their first wine, dropping the Railers to 0-2.

Derby senior quarterback Mercer Thatcher scored early in the first quarter to put Newton on their heels the rest of the game. He had 131 rushing yards on 10 carries.

The Panthers dominated the rest of the game with their stellar defense, allowing only 17 points. While Newton had 207 passing yards, they only managed 23 rushing.

The running game was especially impressive, though.

Junior running back Dylan Edwards and sophomore Derek Hubbard scored a combined five touchdowns — Edwards had three, while Hubbard scored two.

Edwards finished with 291 rushing yards on 25 carries with a long of 70 yards.
