They rush in from all around the school to line up and wait. For much of their 25 minute lunch period, students wait in long lines to purchase their lunches. The school has tried different techniques to make this process quicker, one being the finger scanners. After having issues last year, the district decided to try something new; key pads.
“It’s slow for now but it’s something new, we’ll make it work out. The finger scanners broke down a lot so hopefully these won’t break down as much,” cafeteria worker Angela Mills said.
Each student is assigned a number which they must enter into the computer through a keypad to receive their lunch.
“We stopped using the finger scanners mainly to make the numbers more secure when buying lunches,” Mrs. Wallace said.
“I really don’t mind it too bad, the texture of it is kinda squishy. It’s a little weird. I suppose, after a while, people will get the hang of it and will go faster,” junior Rachael Brewer said.
Derby is constantly updating its technology, and the lunch key pads are just another advancement the school has made. Soon, students won’t have to wait as long in line to buy their lunch and have more time to eat.
