While a lot of sports at DHS have all-state teams, there are also all-state bands and orchestras. Many students from around the state audition to be in large ensembles. 

The all-state 5A and 6A band has 108 members, and the orchestra has 107, including , both wind and string instruments. 

Out of the about 14 Derby kids who auditioned, two made the band, one was chosen as an alternate for the band, and one made the orchestra.

“I didn’t find out until somebody else told me because I didn’t think I was getting in,” freshman Brandon Beal said. “So I was pretty surprised about that.”

The ensembles will rehearse together and have a performance in February.
