Page 4: Pushing forward — The story of a strong back

Junior running back Derek Hubbard entered the football season ready to make his mark.

Hubbard, who averaged nine yards a carry as a sophomore, is a quick, strong back with the ability to run around and through defenders. He also has good hands and can catch the ball out of the backfield.

“He is very dedicated to the game,” running back coach Todd Olmstead said. “Derek is a great kid who I love to death. He works extremely hard in practice, in the weight room and on his own time. I can’t wait to see all the great things he will do over these next two years.”

If Hubbard were at another school, he would likely be a starter.

Instead he’s part of a 1-2 punch with senior running back Dylan Edwards, the reigning Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year. They’re both speedy and tough to tackle.

It’s the rare team that kicks or punts to Hubbard and Edwards. Bishop Carroll made just that mistake on Sept. 16 and Hubbard returned it 80 yards, while Edwards had a 92-yard return for a touchdown.

Coach Brandon Clark has found ways to utilize both backs, and the running backs push each other to be better in practice and games.

Hubbard’s individual goal is to be better than last year.

But his primary goals are team oriented.

“I think we have a good chance at going to state this year,” he said.
