In a tightly contested match, the Panthers soccer team lost to Washburn Rural for the second straight year in the quarterfinals of the Class 6A tournament.

Derby scored first on a penalty kick goal by Angel Vielmas.

But going into halftime, Washburn Rural had a 2-1 lead.

It got worse when Washburn scored its third straight goal midway through the second half. Just 30 seconds later, though, Derby sophomore Leo Fernandez scored to make the score 3-2.

The Panthers had some chances in the final two minutes to tie the score, including an excellent cross from junior Mason Richardson.
