Increased gas prices hurt Derby community

Higher prices are result of Hurricane Harvey

Even though Hurricane Harvey hit oil refineries only located in Texas, its effects are far-reaching as gas prices in Derby have risen. As of 5:45 p.m. Thursday, gas prices were as high as $2.49 per gallon.

For some students, the high prices are burdensome.

“I don’t have as much money to spend,” junior Briana Kimball said.

Others do not have to pay for their gas themselves, but it still impacts their families.

“I don’t pay for my own gas,” senior Melissa Hart said. “My parents do, but they have to pay more, so it sucks for them.”

While such a great increase in gas prices can be hard on drivers, they understand the circumstances.

“Because (Hurricane Harvey) hit the oil refineries, it has to happen,” Hart said.
