Back to State

Derby girls basketball is headed to state.

After a 57-29 blowout win against Wichita East, the girls take home another sub-state championship.

Senior Addyson Brown led the team with 18 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.

This is Brown’s fourth consecutive year to go to state.

“I think it’s really special, especially since people didn’t think we were going to make it this far,” Brown said. “I don’t even think people expected us to win league and now we are going back to state… I’m just really ecstatic to take a new group back to state and experience that with them.”

Emotions were high after the win for junior Destiny Smith.

“You can’t really describe it, a lot of people counted us out and we just came here to play. And we proved everyone wrong,” Smith said. “It’s a great feeling and nothing really can top it… we just got to stay focused and got to stay humble.”

Tonight the Panthers are celebrating their big win.

But the job is not finished.

“The job is never finished,” Brown said. “I think the teams that win in the postseason are the ones that work the hardest and stay together honestly and it’s far from finished. We still have three more games if we want to win the state championship, so I think our mind is on that and we aren’t done yet, but we are going to celebrate today.”
