Homecoming royalty: How candidates are chosen

Reagan Cowden

It’s that time of the year.

Fall is quickly approaching, and with fall comes homecoming.

One of the most well-known traditions of homecoming is the royalty.

“We start with a list,” said Sara Wilson, who is the student council adviser and organizes school dances. “I request a list from Mrs. (Kelly) Watkins, who’s the registrar, of all seniors who have a 2.5 GPA or higher.

“… I think this year there’s over 150 girls and 130 boys.”

Once they get the list of all the names of the students, a Google form is sent out to all the seniors to vote.

“When we get those results back at the end of the day … we’ll sort through them and make it down to our list of finalists which is usually 20 to 25 students,” Wilson said.

The candidates must have no discipline problems and must be involved in at least one school activity,

“Our goal is to announce the final five candidates two weeks before homecoming,” Wilson said.

Homecoming is Sept. 29 — the dance is Sept. 30 — so be on the lookout for your possible 2017 homecoming royalty.
