The two injuries during the Eisenhower game to seniors Evan Clark and Alex McGill might have been more serious than initially thought.

Senior Alex McGill came off the field with a leg injury in the third quarter but went back in soon after. He hopped on one leg out of the game later and sat out for the remainder.

“I’m out for the season,” said McGill, Derby’s only returning defensive starter.

Rumors floated around on Tuesday that McGill tore his ACL and is out for the rest of the season.

“When I first did it I knew something was wrong, but I was stubborn and I went back out there and after I did it the second time, I knew I couldn’t go back out there,” he said.

He had no regrets that he may have worsened his condition.

“It makes it a lot worse considering that was the last game I will ever play in… but, oh well,” McGill said.

McGill hopes to be back in time for baseball season and go to college for baseball.

Clark was also injured during the 94-yard play by senior Brody Kooser, which ended in a touchdown.

“I went to the doctor today and he said only 2-3 weeks, so not too bad. He thinks it’s a partial tear of the MCL,” Clark said.

“I hope that he (Evan) comes back in time to play the rest of the season and hopefully get more offense,” McGill said.

Clark was seen slowly walking off the field and sitting on the sideline with ice taped around his leg.

“It definitely hurt cause the guy swung into the side of my knee and I felt it pop and I just went to the ground immediately… thankfully I was wearing a knee brace at the time,” Clark said.

He didn’t know how bad it was going to be, but he knew he would be out.

“Since it’s self-healing, it’s actually not that big of a deal… so as long as I let it heal properly and do everything correctly I should be good,” Clark said.

Derby fans were not the only ones wishing McGill could still return to the field.

“The first thing I said when (Alex) came over, I was like ‘we both can’t be hurt.’… But I think someone is gonna step up, someone always has in the past,” Clark said.

Clark has received four out-of-state college football offers since May.

“Yesterday I talked to a college coach and he asked how the first game went and I was like ‘I actually didn’t play that much,’” Clark said.

Both the seniors have hopes for the team while they are out of the game.

“I hope they don’t really try to think about me while they are out there, they’re in the game. Some starters came and were like ‘hey, bro, what’s wrong?’ And I was like ‘hey, don’t worry, just play hard. I’ll be back soon enough. Don’t worry about me right now,’” Clark said.

McGill added: “I hope for someone to step up on the defense and that they have a semi-good if not great season.”
