Earth Day

Earth day falls on April 22nd every year to remind us how important this planet we call home really is. But since the first Earth day in 1970, temperatures have risen rapidly, Icebergs have melted, oceans have risen, and forest fires kill thousands each year.

March 1, 2023, The Biden Administration approved The Willow Project. This project was originally planned to give America  access to more oil.

However, many think this plan will only endanger and ruin the Northern Alaska area.

“The Willow Project clearly harms the environment,” sophomore Annabelle Ripstein states.

Derby High School’s landscape is often littered by students on campus. This trash often blows with the wind and never makes it into the trash can.

Dead grass around campus can be caused by litter or traffic of students coming in and out of school, but even when the warmer weather comes around, it seems most classes stay inside for the eight hour school day.

“I think Earth Day is important because we need to take care of our planet so it doesn’t die,” says sophomore Ellie Beran. “I like to plant things in my grandma’s garden and pick up trash to help.”
