When Derby faced the undefeated Bishop Carroll offense, its defense gave up some points, but it held firm.

“Honestly the defense actually played really solid, it’s just offense was in and out,” senior center Jordan Renard said. “… That just made time for Bishop Carroll to come back on us… overall we will do a lot better because we learn from our mistakes on the passing game and also learn how to pass the ball a lot better at the same time.”

The 54-45 victory over Carroll was the most anticipated game of the season, and now the Panthers (4-1) continue to their last two regular season opponents.

They travel to Salina Central (0-5) today at 5 p.m. The game time was changed due to expected bad weather.

Derby plays host to Salina South on Oct. 13 for senior night, then plays Campus in its last regular-season home game.

“Last few games, obviously compared to what we have been doing, actually a lot of us are calling it the gauntlet cause we had five pretty solid teams to start the season,” Renard said. “So we are all looking forward to it kind of slowing down a little bit, but that doesn’t mean we can look at them like they are easy. But we have to keep moving forward and try our hardest every time.”

The Panthers hope to grab two more wins. Playoff seeding is based on record, point differential and wins within a class.

Currently Derby is sitting at a No. 6 seed. The Panthers were the top seed heading into the 2016 playoffs. Derby could move up because Garden City (5-0) plays at Northwest (4-1) tonight.

But no need to jump ahead.

“I just take it one game at a time,” Renard said. “I just try and focus on the people that game and I just don’t worry about anyone else and try to block out what everyone else is saying.”
