In junior Easton Splane’s first start at quarterback, he completed all six of his passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns in the 48-0 win over Campus.
“I was nervous to start, but after a couple plays it all came back to me,” Splane said.
Splane, who played safety previously, had to quickly transition back to quarterback after senior Braxton Clark suffered a lacerated kidney in the Sept. 22 victory over Hutchinson. According to coach Brandon Clark, it is assumed that Braxton Clark will return for the playoffs.
After the Panthers’ first drive ended with a fumble, Splane showcased exactly what his team needed on the very next drive. He saw something in the defense, and he used all his strength and threw the ball into the air.
“The left side only had two people and the safety flew down and Rowan (Foster) wheeled it up, so I just tried to launch the ball as far as I could,” Splane said.
Foster caught the ball and ran freely into the endzone for the 73-yard touchdown play and the game’s first score.
With all the pressure on him, Splane changed all the momentum in the game with one throw.
“I think that pass was huge for me and the team,” Splane said.
Splane was taken out of the game at the end of the 2nd quarter after going 6 for 6, 191 yards, and three touchdowns.
His previous action at quarterback came in the 2022 Class 6A semifinal loss at Manhattan. Braxton Clark had started in place of injured starter Brock Zerger, but after Clark got injured, Splane came into play.
Splane and the Panthers take their four-game winning streak into Maize tonight.
