Symphony orchestra surprises during first concert

On Oct. 10, Derby High School hosted its first orchestra for the school year.

The symphony orchestra opened the concert with three selections.

What was noticeably different was the outfits symphony wore. Instead of the the white top and black bottoms, the symphony orchestra wore all black, just like the chamber orchestra.

Chamber orchestra, the honor orchestra, performed four songs. The last song was what caught the attention of the majority of the audience members.

The jazzy song, Chicken Foot Transplant composed by Matt Turner, had more than just the members of the orchestra playing. Sophomore Ethan King, who also plays the viola, went to the back of the group to jam along with the group on his drums.

Orchestra director, Dr. Wesley DeSpain, joined the group as well. He played along with the clarinet, earning the cheers of many in the audience.

“This happens once every 8 years,” Dr. DeSpain said during the chamber orchestra class on Thursday.

The chamber orchestra, except for the cellos, had to stand up to play. The cellos and basses got to flash off during the song as well. The players spun around their instruments when the song allowed them too.

Once the group finished, the audience clapped and cheered. The chamber orchestra got to play the song again for an encore.

Both of the orchestras were rewarded with the traditional donuts the next two days.
