Seven Derby students earn All-State selections in band, orchestra and jazz band

On Jan. 6 there were state band and orchestra auditions for students all over Kansas. The Kansas Music Educators Association, KMEA, had students come to Salina Lakewood Middle School at 9 a.m. to pick up their audition times.

Some students had to wait all day to perform one song in front of the judges. Now, not everyone can go to this audition. Participants must first make it past district.

Many were disappointed after their auditions, but seven Derby students received good news.

Senior Quinn Meyer made the All-State Orchestra for the cello.

Four students made the All-State 56A Band — sophomores Chloe Brown (flute) and Adam Schmidt (trumpet), and seniors Abigail Grief (B-flat clarinet) and Yanira Muniz (bass clarinet) — and senior Jake Shoemaker (trombone) made it as an alternate.

Senior Joel Lewis made the All-State Jazz Band as an alternate for the tenor saxophone.

The different bands and orchestra will have their performances on Feb. 24 at the Century II Convention Center.
