Meyer: District should have canceled school for safety’s sake

Kendal Meyer

On Thursday, bad weather conditions led to the cancellation of most schools in the Wichita area. But Derby didn’t follow the trend.

School was in session despite the icy road conditions. Students were not happy.

Around 7:15 a.m., my house got a call from the school district. I thought it would be a cancellation call, but no, school was still in session. I got ready to head out the door, but the car doors were frozen shut.

Great.

So I got to the school, and the parking lot was empty. Students refused to drive under the conditions, despite what administration thought.

Not only did students not come to school, they let the school district know they were irked on social media.

“It’s raining ice cancel school for once,” sophomore Savannah Kheen tweeted.

“Classic Derbs,” senior Grace Reynolds tweeted.

“A truck nearly just slid straight from the parking lot down on the practice field because of the ice… but it’s safe though,” junior Promise Asher tweeted.

I think it is safe to say the safety of the students driving on these roads is at risk.

So what is the point of even having classes?

Nobody is here. A teacher can’t actually teach a lesson. What is canceling one day of school going to hurt?

You’d rather risk new teenage drivers out on the slick streets than cancel one day of school? Other districts around Derby didn’t have school, but why wouldn’t Derby cancel?

It’s not like our roads were much different than theirs.
